Macau, also spelled as Macao, is an administrative region of China. The city is located in the south-east of China, 60 kilometers from Hong Kong, and facing the South Chinese Sea. Macau was a Portuguese colony from the 16th century till 1999, when the region was handed over to China. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate however that Macau operates with a high degree of autonomy until atl least 2049.
